Dear Madam/Sir:
Earlier in December I spoke with someone from Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs who informed that the new DS7007 was under consideration and had not been finalized. I believe that this is part of the work and travel program.
Very briefly, I find jobs for French students and while I am not a sponsor I help them navigate the procurement process for the J1 Visa with the help of CIEE and the process of acquiring the DS2019. The students stay at my house for a six to eight week period, I have done this for several years and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The jobs that I find are anywhere from 25-30 hours per week and my first concern with the new proposed guidelines for employment is the stipulation of 32 hours per week. Many establishments are simply unable to state in advance that they can guarantee this weekly employment of 32 hours. My question is would it be possible to combine two jobs to reach the satisfactory weekly employment guideline if this form is approved, or could the weekly requirement be reduced to something more reasonable. Simply stated the 32 hour requirement could pose an obstacle for any prosective employer, my employers are all honest people and I do not wish to place them in any precarious situation.
Secondly, I find that the students I have lodged and found employment for are normally satisfied with 25 hours per week, they look upon this as a cultural experience and while they wish to cover their expenses the contact with our daily life has been of enormous benefit to them. I charge very little for their food and do not require any rent on their part.
I really want to continue hosting these students and sincerely hope that the new demands will not curtail my involvement in something that all participants have found to be of great benefit and wonderful memories.
Sincerely,
Lewis Seiler
