We are two health care providers and have never seen filthier accommodations than on a plane. We suggest that the health departments begin to swab surfaces on every plane on a regular basis, that pillows and blankets be disposable and not reused, that the head of the seat be covered with a non-porous disposable cover and changed between passengers, and that the bathrooms be disinfected between flights. All these simple measures would make the unfortunate condition of being grounded a bit more tolerable. Being on the tarmac for long periods of time is not healthy for anyone, particularly the elderly, infants and chronically ill. If the airlines have to continue this practice, we suggest that they compensate their customers financially. The fee should be set high enough to discourage the practice, and to recompense professionals whose "time is money."
