Nationally, more than half the population lives within 200 meters of a major road,
which according to the census bureau, a major road is not based on traffic
volume. The EPA states that their is no health threat to children in relation to the
Execuative Order. The Gauderman et al study in the journal lancet indicates the
regional approach to transportion conformity is flawed. EPA's own research on
near roadway exposures indicate the same. Transportation conformity needs to
address the impacts on local receptors. Setting a national standard for known
carcigens such as benzene and 1,3 butidene would be a great start.
