In light of new scientific evidence about the health effects of lead, especially for infants and
children, I urge EPA to choose a NAAQS for lead that is very low, 0.10 micrograms per cubic
meter. I support improving the lead monitoring network. In Phoenix, Arizona, where my 2-year
old granddaughter lives, there is a major airport; lead monitors should be placed at Sky Harbor
airport in Phoenix. In Flagstaff, where I live, we have a smaller airport which has been expanded
to allow large jets to land and take-off. A lead monitor should be place at Flagstaff's Pulliam
Airport.
I recommend that the implementation schedule be shortened so that EPA issue final
designations by September 2010, states submit State Implementation Plans by September
2011, and states be required to meet the new standards by Fall 2013. Lead is too serious a
health issue to allow 8 years before the new standards are met.
Thank you for the opportunity to comment on this important revision to the NAAQS.
