I commend the EPA for making this small step toward limiting the GHG emissions of our electrical plants. As a citizen of Illinois, a state that produces one of the lowest grades coals in America and which has historically depended on coal fired plants, this is a welcome, if not tardy action.
Illinois is, as are many states are, moving toward natural gas burning electric plants. While this is still not the best that we can do, it is better than we have done in the past.
In 1916, Thomas Edison stated, ""We should make use of the forces of nature and should obtain all our power in this way. Sunshine is a form of energy, wind and sea currents are manifestations of this energy. Do we make use of them? Oh, no! We burn forests and coal, like tenants burning down our front door for heating. We live like wild settlers."
Ninety-six years later, the light bulb in our heads seems to be turning on. As a citizen who relies on clean air as one of the three critical needs, water and clean food being the other two, I sincerely hope that the EPA will follow through from consideration to implementation of this legislation as one small step for the EPA, and an equally small step for mankind, but a step forward in either case.
