RE: EPA-HQ-OAR-2009-0927 Mandatory Reporting of Greenhouse Gas from Additional Sources of Fluorinated Gases I am in favor of the proposed rule of Mandatory Reporting of Greenhouse Gas from Additional Sources of Fluorinated Gases. I found it odd that not all businesses that emit greenhouse gasses were subject to, at the very least, reporting of the amount that is being released into the environment. Although there are two other proposed rules on the docket pertaining to this topic I chose this one because it pertains to fluorinated gases, which according to the EPA are some of the most potent greenhouse gasses. What alarms me the most is that even though fluorinated gasses only comprise roughly two percent of greenhouse gas emissions they can be up to a thousand times more effective at trapping heat in the atmosphere and some can take up to a millennia to dissipate. Although there are negatives mainly for the businesses relating to the costs of the reporting, I believe that the potential benefits far outweigh these costs. By requiring the reporting of this information will allow for more accurate creation and implementation of future rules and regulations in regards to fluorinated gases. Also, it will create a transparency of information, making it available to parent companies and the general public as to the amount of gasses that are being released by companies and no longer let them hide potential harmful effects they are causing to the environment. As environmental protection and awareness continues to become increasingly prevalent, this reporting will allow companies to make public their footprint on the environment and benchmark themselves against others in their industry while creating a standard for the entire industry. All in all it is a shame that companies have not been required to report this information sooner as the potential effects of the gasses continue to progress. Lastly, the reporting of these figures will just allow for more iinformation to be collected, which will hopefully lead to more accurate studies of the harmful effects along with better solutions providing a cleaner planet for us all.
