As a previous director of both Galveston County Mosquito Control Dist in Texas and Ouachita Parish Mosquito Abatement Dist in LA as well as having a degree Entomology, I understand the need to have a product like Resmethrin for use. Resistance to active ingredients continues to be a major concern in TX and LA. The vector species of mosquito that is responsible for both SLE and WNV viruses has shown high levels of resistance in many areas. One way to combat this species is through the use of resistance monitoring at the local govenmental level. Resmethrin is very often the product of choice when resistance levels begin to be of concern. Resmethrin is very much a needed tool for public health officials in their fight to keep citizens safe during peak virus outbreaks. Without Resmethrin, agencies could find themselves in a situation that they may have a resistant mosquito population and virus activity present, but unable to effectivly control the insect. This result would prove extreamly dangerous for the public and could lead to illness and death if disease transmission occurs.
I ask the EPA to consider all possible options to keep Resmethrin on the market and available to govenmental mosquito abatement agencies for as long as possible. Again, it is a key tool in their fight to keep the public safe from potential mosquito borne virus threats.
