Although Acibenzolar-S-methyl is determined as a low risk on the toxicity level for people, it does not take into account this chemical’s reaction to other known chemicals already in existence. Acibenzolar-S-methyl could negatively react to the chemicals in other foods. Currently there is no data on Acibenzolar-S-methyl effect on common prescription drugs. It is unknown whether Acibenzolar-S-methyl would have negative reaction to a person taking a certain prescription or whether this pesticide would make the prescription inactive. This could potentially be dangerous for either situation.
Tests done by the EPA have also shown that Acibenzolar-S-methyl is highly toxic to aquatic organisms. In freshwater animals it was highly toxic to the rainbow trout and moderately toxic to the blue gill and water flea. In estuarine animals it is moderately toxic to the sheepshead minnow, but highly toxic to the eastern oyster and mysid shrimp. The contamination of Acibenzolar-S-methyl in bodies of water could negatively affect the livelihood of many fishermen. Acibenzolar-S-methyl may be useful in voiding many types of fungi and other pests on crops, but it certainly has the potential in decreasing the number of aquatic animals.
