I worked with Dr. Tumeo while we served on a multi-stakeholder management group from 1999 through 2003 to develop human health and ecological risk-based cleanup standards for the future use of the Joliet Army Ammunition Plant Superfund site as a national tallgrass prairie. Dr. Tumeo traveled from Cleveland to Illinois to attend our meetings, which were held as frequently as once per month. We were required to review materials between meetings, including the draft and final versions of the group’s work products that were often voluntarily prepared by Dr. Tumeo. His expertise in risk assessment and risk management, his ability to express terms and concepts in a way that everyone could understand, his vision of how to get to the end product, his mastery of small group consensus decision making processes, and his energy and passion for this project all contributed to the successful development and implementation of cleanup standards that resulted in restoring a former ammunition plant to a tallgrass prairie. Dr. Tumeo has the professional qualifications, experience, and expertise to serve on the HSRB as shown in his attached current curriculum vitae and biosketch.
