The attached study reports changes in coastal ocean pH in Washington state since
2000, and provides a methodological approach and data linking changes in pH over
this time period to changes in marine ecological communities on the shoreline.
The data demonstrate an unexpectedly large drop in pH over the study period,
strong statistical relationships of pH change over several times scales to nine
key drivers expected to be linked mechanistically to ocean pH, and reduced
performance of dominant calcifying organisms, based on detailed species
replacement patterns, as pH declines. These data support the need for the EPA
to evaluate the effects of ocean acidification on coastal processes and respond
accordingly.
