I am a resident of Brooklyn New York. I lived in Park Slope near the gowanus
canal. I have traversed the canal on numerous occasions and can attest to the
fact that an oily sheen is frequently visible on the surface of the water. An
oily substance can often be seen leaking from the public place property into the
canal. The canal often has a foul odor. I believe that a NPL designation for
the canal is the only effective way to clean up the canal's heavily polluted
sediment. This cleanup will allow economic development of what is now a
blighted and largely unused post-industrial area that could be used for many
different land uses, including parks, residential, commercial, and even some
industrial uses. I urge the EPA to add the Gowanus canal to the NPL.
