I conditionally support the designation of the Gowanus Canal as a Superfund site in order to clean up the entire length of the canal. My conditions are: 1) that the project receives immediate funding and physical clean up commences within 2 years. 2) that the clean up is not delayed trying to assess blame for the pollution and receive compensation. (There will be plenty of time to track down responsible parties while the clean up progresses.) 3) that no restrictions on the use of the canal (for commercial or recreational purposes) are imposed until the clean up begins.
