I appreciate how the EPA works with citizens, experts, and business owners to
help determine the sources of pollution in our waterways. I also appreciate the
EPA's role in seeking public involvement by informing community residents about
cleanup sites near their homes and by giving us the opportunity to participate in
the process of qualifying a site for federal funding through comments such as this.
In the case of the Peck Iron site, it seems that the current landowners are willing
to work with the EPA and the Elizabeth River Project. To me, their willingness to
accept responsibility in any form is like a runner clearing their first hurdle. The
efforts of the Elizabeth River Project have greatly improved many wetlands areas in
the Hampton Roads Area and their drive is commendable. I feel that because of
the current state of the Elizabeth River, sites such as the Peck Iron site should be
areas of significant focus in order to help stay the flow of chemicals into the river
through runoff and leeching. As a taxpaying citizen of the Hampton Roads area,
and as someone who enjoys fishing and the aesthetic qualities of all of our inlets
and tributaries, I believe Federal funding for remediating the hazards of this site is
necessary and a well-placed use of tax dollars.
