I think that this is a great regulation. The addition of these ten regulations to the National Priorities List is important to the further protection of our environment, particularly in those states in which the sites are located. It is crucial to have ongoing and continuous monitoring of those sites that pose a risk to our society. The stated purpose of the NPL is to "primarily to guide the EPA in determining which sites warrant further investigation to assess the nature and extent of public health and environmental risks associated with a release of hazardous substances, pollutants or contaminants." While this is an important function, the fact that this action does not assign liability should be remedied. The fact that a site was placed on this list means that there is some indication that something is amiss and further action is almost certainly warranted. As such, immediate and appropriate action needs to be taken. Those sites on the NPL should continue to receive ongoing monitoring and all efforts to expedite the cleaning up of these sites to provide for the health, welfare, safety of citizens.
