To whom it may concern,
I wanted to offer my support, as a citizen, of vehicle emissions standards that limit GHG emissions and attempt to mitigate the effects of climate change. As an individual market actor, it is difficult for me to drive consumption patterns. The ability of state and federal regulation to ensure vehicles are lower-emissions gives me peace of mind at the dealership. That said, I am disheartened by the federal legislation that allows states to adopt California standards for emissions or no separate standard whatsoever. In my opinion, given the EPA’s weak record on forcing emissions standards, state pressure ought to be exerted by traditionally democratic states to force vehicle standards up. If we continue at our current pace of GHG emissions standards, we will not be able to cancel out the present affects of climate change and certainly not able to work backwards and ameliorate the past affects of climate change. The ability to breathe clean air is a human right. I am glad that Maryland is committing itself to the health of its citizens through this piece of legislation and urge the EPA to adopt this measure without opposition and as quickly as possible.
Regards,
Erik Lampmann
