I am an Indiana college student. I commute to and from school every day, which means I am outdoors quite often. According to in.gov, during automobile refinishing, emissions occur due to evaporation of solvents in primers, paints, other coatings, and in the cleaning solutions. These VOCs then go into the ozone. People with respiratory issues, children, and healthy people are at risk when exposed to ozone pollution. Extending the automobile refinishing rules to all Indiana counties to maintain 8-hour ozone standards is an excellent idea. According to in.gov, extending the Indiana refinishing rule to the whole state will reduce VOCs by 25% from 2002 actual emissions (2,528 tons per year). They also stated that by using new types of paint, primers, and coatings there are overall cost savings. It is said on EPA.gov, that exposure to ozone pollution can cause difficulty breathing. I agree that the refinishing rule should be extended in order to lower health risks and help the ozone. Another alternative would be instead of extending the rule to the whole state, extend it to a certain number of counties within the state.
