As a Hawaii resident for my entire life and a Maui resident for the past 23 years I am deeply concerned about the harmful effects of the Sugar Cane Industry. Not only am I concerned for my own health, but the long term permanent damage this industry has on our environment and national treasures such as Haleakala National Park and the Ocean Reefs. I would ask that you absolutely include all of the HC&S corporation's smoke stacks in your review and include the electric power production emissions of the Puunene Sugar Mill as well as the haze caused by the cane field burning and cane field dust in any review for possible implementation of pollution control measures.
In additions to the Sugar Mill power production emissions and the cane filed burning, please note the haze and pollution caused by the loose soil dust from the recently cleared fields. After harvest, the cane fields are left bare and the loose topsoil is picked up by the trade winds and carried directly to our coastline, coating and eventually killing the living coral reefs of South Maui. The trade winds on Maui are constant and therefore so is the flow of killer cane field dust. Please dont overlook this very important issue. We are counting on you, the EPA, to protect our environment.
