I have seen the cracks you describe. They are so fine they can't be readily seen
by
the naked eye. I use airpressure pumped into the muffler and spray soap solution
in
the area. They show up easily.
My comment would be to recommend this test and to allow REPAIR of the muffler
instead of replacement. Also one should always fly with a CO detector in the
cockpit
such as the Quantum Eye detector--inexpensive, good shelf life (18mo), and
effective.
