I have seen the cracks you describe. They are so fine they can't be readily seen by the naked eye. I use airpressure pumped into the muffler and spray soap solution in the area. They show up easily. My comment would be to recommend this test and to allow REPAIR of the muffler instead of replacement. Also one should always fly with a CO detector in the cockpit such as the Quantum Eye detector--inexpensive, good shelf life (18mo), and effective.
