After complying with SB 1194A on several airplanes, I would recommend one change
to the proposed Airworthiness Directive. I would recommend that an alternative
to Part I step 14A of service bulletin 1194A be established. Specifically, a
smaller placard be allowed. The Piper Placard is 6x4 inches, with print nearly
a quarter inch tall. This placard is very oversize and is legible from a great
distance from the baggage door. It is unsightly, and I believe will lead many
owners to remove the placard as soon as the Aircraft is returned after
maintenance (no owner has kept it on after the service bulletin). This placard
needs only to be legible to someone standing beside the baggage door to operate
the door, and does not need to be legible from any great distance. I propose
that a placard of size 1.25" x 4" with letters at least .125" tall be allowed to
be placed immediately adjacent to the baggage door handle instead of the piper
part number 88451-002 kit or 100700-079 placard as required in the service
bulletin. (proposed placard attached as .pdf file)
