Safair only experienced one flap carriage spindle failure before the introduction of AD 2003-24-08. The main concern in this matter is the fact that perfect serviceable carriages would be scrapped due to enforcing the life limits on the flap carriages. Stricter inspections and overhaul requirements would ensure that stress and pitting corrosion is found and corrected which will avoid failures and can extend the flap carriage life.
