Dear Sir, Subject: Comments from Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS), Norway-Denmark- Sweden on new LPT case bolt. During the 2007-2010 we had 6 JT8D-217C engine LPT turbine failures and all these engines are in compliance of FAA AD 2005-02-03. All 6 LPT damages failures are contained and only one in-flight shutdown was noticed. We have experienced the present LPT bolt design supports the contained failures. FAA and Pratt are aware the root cause for JT8D-200 series engine LPT failures being stage 3 / stage 4 LPT turbine blades shroud wear and subsequent high cycle fatigue. The new proposed design of LPT case bolts may improve the containment capabilities, but without being eliminating the root cause the new proposed design of longer bolts with sleeves may increases the weight and cost. Kind Regards,
