Docket No. FAA-2010-0562; Directorate Identifier 2009-NE-29-AD is applicable to Trent 500, 700, and 800 engine models and proposes FPI inspections of HPC stage 1 to stage 4 rotor discs. The HPC drum in the Trent 700 engine is a six stage rotor and is referred to as the ‘HPC Rotor Shaft’. Since each engine model has different nomenclature, we request that a common name is used when referring to the subject part such as ‘HP Compressor Drum’. Also, the proposed AD requires an FPI inspection at every shop visit. A shop visit is defined in the NPRM as a separation of pairs of major mating engine flanges. It is not uncommon for an engine to require a minimum workscope to repair a specific condition but still require separation of a major flange. If the proposed language were to remain, every engine shop visit would then lead to a ‘heavy’ visit and would no doubt exceed the 20 work hour estimate in the Cost of Compliance section. We ask that the definition of “engine shop visit” be changed to a Refurbishment (Level 3) shop visit or Overhaul (Level 4) shop visit. This would be consistent with EASA AD 2009-0073R1 and SB 72-AF964, Rev 1.
