Paragraph (g) of the proposed rule allows operators to review the aircraft records to determine the RFTU serial number or perform an inspection to determine the RFTU serial number.
Paragraph (g)(2) states that if you find an affected RFTU prior to further flight you must perform an operational check.
The requirement in paragraph (g)(2) to perform an operational test before further flight does not take into account the aircraft records review as the method used to determine the RFTU serial number. Paragraph (g)(2) as it is currently written would force operators to ground any aircraft found to with an affected RFTU as soon as the records review is accomplished to meet the before further flight requirement. Paragraph (g)(2) in the final rule should be changed to allow operators that perform the serial number check by a records review the opportunity to schedule the operational check without the need to immediately ground the aircraft.
