40 Mile Air in Tok, AK currently operates a fleet of 5 Pa-18 Super Cubs and has been operating them since the 1960's. All aircraft have been equipped with the AAF rotary type mag switch located in the left panel next to the pilots seat.
40-Mile Air operated a 1978 Pa-18 that was equipped with the toggle type switches. A short time after acquiring the aircraft it was converted to the rotary type switch as we saw a potential problem of the toggle type switches being incidentally being turned off in flight.
With 40,000+ hours of operation in 40-Mile Air has never experienced the mags being incidentally shut-off during operations, a large portion of that time was in the cold months when the pilot is bundled up with a lot of clothes and the most possible time for the mags to be turned off.
Obviously in our experience the rotary type switch has never been a problem, will not be in the future and should not be included in this proposed rule.
