I currently maintain a 172RG, and believe with all my heart, that if you perform an annual inspection with due diligence, any faults with the powerpack will be found and corrected before the aircraft is released. One incident of of this nature does not seem to dictate an AD. It was most likely the result of poor maintenance/negligence of the mechanics, or owner maintenance, and not a failure of Cessna's product, which has been out of production for 30 years, without any other failures or fires. Perhaps stressing to mechanics the importance of paying attention to what they inspect, not just checking a box, would be a better way to address this problem.
