I submit that Regulatory Option 2, to take the proposed action, should be carried
out concerning the proposed regulation docket number FDA-2000-P-0126:
Proposal to Revoke the Standards for Lowfat Yogurt and Nonfat Yogurt and to
amend the standard for Yogurt. After the analysis of the economic impact this
proposal would have, it is evident that carrying out all of the proposed regulations
would be most beneficial to the consumers and reasonable for the manufacturers.
The cost of relabeling items which read "containing live and active cultures," but
do not meet the set standards of this proposal, may seem trivial; however, I
believe this aspect is important to consumer society and consistency in the
market place. A consumer body can not be efficient if not properly informed,
especially when considering "obese" consumer societies like the United States’.
The public, having an added interest and scrutiny in what they consume, needs to
be better informed in hopes of restoring not only personal health, but also national
health. Another step in restoring national health is creating trust in industry and
the products they sell us is. Labeling needs to be honest to secure this trust. I
believe that this aspect of the proposal cannot be eliminated, which is why the
proposal should be accepted in its entirety.
