On behalf of the Family Farm Defenders (FFD) and myself as a dairy farmer for 30
years, I would like to comment on FDA Docket No. 2007-0629 in regards to the
labeling of ultra-filtered milk used in cheese making. FFD strongly opposes this
change. Changing the definition of milk to allow ultra-filtered milk to be labeled as
milk is absurd. The ultra-filtration process takes lactose, vitamins and minerals
out of milk, leaving it and the products made from it inferior in taste and quality, as
does dairy products made with the illegal dairy waste product MPC. Approving
this change would shortchange and deceive the consumer. The consumers
should have the right to know what is in their food. We, as dairy farmers, would
like to know that they are getting as high a quality product off the store shelves,
as we are sending off our farms to the processing plants.
Every dairy farmer in the U.S. pays a dairy promotion fee every month, mandated
by the federal government, for the advertising of real dairy products. Allowing this
proposed change would be contrary to this program and an insult to us all.
It appears to us that the only reason for this proposed change, would be to
increase the profits of unscrupulous food manufacturers.
