I am in support of more extensive labeling on our packaged foods. As a kidney disease specialist dietitian the importance of phosphorus and potassium content in foods is critical for the health of patients with chronic kidney disease. Managing diet is also very important in delaying complications of this disease and in the long run can help save health care dollars. In addition phosphorus and potassium additives are more common in processed foods and as a result pose more a problem for these patients. In addition, other disease states and medications require diet awareness of these minerals such as diabetes, cardiac disease and osteoporosis risk.
