As a diabetes researcher, nothing stands out more from the literature than caloric excess - whatever the mechanism - as the cause for the decline in quality of life for overweight and obese persons. Labeling is a way to initiate changes in behavior. Giving the caloric content as total calories and as % of average male and female daily requirements is also recommended. Inclusion of a minimum font size for such information and addition of the information to packaging for take out orders, rather than just menus, would also aid in public education.
I urge the legislators to push for changes and let the industry respond as they have in the past; successfully.
