The actual format of the bar code is less important than the information it contains. A standardized format for NDC's would be good as would inclusion of LOT # and Expiration date in the bar code of all drug products. Manufacturers and wholesalers should be able to track where specific lot # are shipped in the event of a recall. Health providers should be able to track Lot and expiration dating at the point of care. Whatever symbology is used it should be one that readily interfaces with existing technology. Most scanners in use in health care will read RSS and 2D barcodes. This ability will then allow us to push HIS providers to include this capability in their technology offerings.
