The Current Good Manufacturing Practices have not been updated since 1986. In the years since, the food system has changed much and the CGMP should be updated. A great amount of scientific research has also been completed during these intervening years therefore a new set of standards must be established based on newer discoveries. A standardized preventative set of rules that all manufacturers would be required to adhere to is a step in the right direction. One of the most important parts of this new rule is the requirement that only qualified individuals be in charge of the food safety system. Training for these qualified individuals is also an important step so that the preventative food safety system is standardized. I believe a supplier approval and verification system should be implemented. This is especially important since 15% of the food consumed in the United States is imported. Having more control over the food supply would certainly improve the food safety system. The suppliers should be able to prove the safety of their products and verification could be implemented by the FDA.
