I am commenting in regard to the proposed changes to the flood insurance program/FEMA. As you know, ND was greatly affected by flooding last summer. Although we built our home significantly above the flood plain (the 100 year flood plain) we chose to have flood insurance since we built our home 18 years ago. Our home in NOT on the river, however Square Butte Creek borders our property on two sides. Last year was the only time we were in danger. We had never needed a sump pump until last year when we used seven of them and an irrigation pump to keep our home dry. We were able to receive some compensation through our flood insurance plan. While this did not cover all our expenses, it certainly helped.
I am asking that you do not change the current coverage as we have no control over how the Corp of Engineers is going to manage the Missouri River/Garrison Dam, etc. Up until last year we felt safe and never believed we would have a flood insurance claim. However we no longer feel that trust and want to maintain the option to obtain assistance should we endure a similar event. We also want to maintain the value of our property.
Thank you for considering this.
