Part 4 - Signals:
The new pedestrian hybrid signal (HAWK) is long over due. There has been
nothing to positively address pedestrian crosswalk safety until now and with this,
the new RRFB and hopefully a new pedestrian signal warrant we will be able to
finally address pedestrian safety.
There are some operational and motorist difficulties with the system that will need
to be worked out, such as:
Pedestrians and cyclists can cross on the flashing red, during the don't walk. With
cyclist approach speeds this could cause conflicts as the motorists may not see
them approaching.
The system does not work with countdown pedestrian signals, see above.
Motorists do not understand why the "signal" is in dark mode until activated which
seems to cause confusion at activation.
