My background is that of commercial driving, 40 + years. Although I want to rid my profession of deadly and careless drivers, the disqualification of a driver takes his job away from him. There is no other driver, be they professional doctors, senators, lawyers, policemen, who, when they pay their fines, or have their driver's license taken from them, are also are told they can no longer go to work in their chosen profession. Imagine a judge finding some movie star guilty of drunken driving, leaving the scene of an accident, maybe even manslaughter, that this star may no longer remain in the theater but must find another profession.
The professional driver must not be punished in a manner that no other citizen can or will be punished. The commercial driver knows better? has more responsibility? Are you also saying, then, that any or all other motorists have less responsibility? know less? How much more responsibility do I have when I am operating as a commercial driver over the parent who is driving with his children in his auto? And, through absolutely no fault of their own, how many literally thousands of children are killed each year by these parents through careless and/or inattentive driving?
