Hours of Service of Drivers

The changes made in 2003 greatly simplified three things: the logging process for the drivers, the auditing function and enforecement. Change is often difficult and seldom embraced by those enduring the change. The benefits of the changes made in 2003 are reflected in the improved safety statistics of the entire industry. As part of the transportation industry for over 30 years, in reviewing the additional proposed HOS rule changes I find I can not support these changes. They countermand the simplicity and enforceability that was put in place in 2003. They complicate the process and seem to be based on unrealistics comcepts. For example, someone's idea that drivers get to take their HOS break "at home". Forcing a human being to spend 54 hours in a truckstop and sleeper cab does nothing to for morale, compliance or safety. Truck driving is a tough life, please do not make it less family friendly. If you've never spent any time on the road, around trucks or in the industry learn the facts from those on the front line. DO NOT support this change. I do not support this change and I don't know anyone who does support this change.
