To further reduce serious interstate motorcoach accidents, the amount of "tired" operators must be reduced. It is obvious that too many bus companies are requiring their operators to work more hours than legally allowed. The current "paper" logbooks that bus drivers use are not effective. Operators write "whatever" hours in their logbooks, often not the truth, especially if it prevents them from working more hours and earning more wages.
Require an "electronic logbook", which automatically will tell enforcement officers at what time that operator boarded and began to operate his bus. It would show all stops and cleary identify "on-duty" times and virtually eliminate cheating. Also, the hours that a charter bus operator spends waiting around for his passengers to return to his bus while touring must be considered "on duty-not driving" not "off duty". They are still awake and getting tired, even if they're resting.
This type of device would also show that which operators are trul getting the 8 or 9 hours "off duty" (most of them sleeping - hopefully) between full workdays.
Please address this and keep our bus passengers safer in the future.
