As a company, we support the ban of texting while driving. However, we recognize the necessity of communicating by cell phones while a bus is enroute. We also recognize the necessity of a driver to utilize a GPS navigation device while enroute when routing changes must be made.
We feel as the employer, we have the obligation to educate our drivers as to the rules and the importance of those rules. However, we feel that if a driver chooses to disobey the rule and text while driving, then the driver should be held responsible for that choice. Being held responsibile should include any fines or administrative actions that FMCSA will take against the driver.
As an employer, we feel that the employer should not be subject to any fines or administrative actions if the employer has educated their drivers as to the rule. An employer cannot be with every employee at all times while out on the road. Drivers must be held responsible for their actions.
In summary, we support the ban on texting while driving.
