I am completely supportive for the prohibition of limiting the use of wireless communication devices; specifically, texting while operating a motor vehicle. After reading some of the supporting documentation, I was shocked to learn about the statistics surrounding texting while driving. As if there already weren't enough worries with automotive accidents resulting from DUIs. Now people have to add on another concern. The amount of people who text and the frequency of their texting will undoubtedly increase in the years to come as the popularity of social networking continues to rise. Anyone who reviews the statistics of the amount of people using sites such as Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter, will find how the amount of users has exponentially grown. Social networking users simply constitute only one subset of text users behind the wheel to be concerned with; combined with the rest, it is a credible, imminent threat that demands immediate responsive action. I believe this proposed prohibition is a step in that direction. Penalties for texting while driving should be severe and threatening enough to thwart people from texting, with harsher punishments for repeat offenders and offenders whose actions results in the death or serious injury of another. As mentioned previously, the utilization of wireless communication devices while driving is a real threat and one that should be taken seriously. I only hope that our government feels the same way and takes an active and prompt interest in limiting the use of wireless communication devices while driving. Nothing that is transmitted in those few seconds is as important as a human life.
