This is comment on Proposed Rule

Gross Combination Weight Rating; Definition

View Comment

The GCW is not the sum of the GVWs when the connections between the vehicles transfer vertical loads, such as 5th wheel hitches. With load bearing couplers a portion of the GVW of one vehicle is included in the GVW of another. The GCW is actually the sum of the Gross Axle Weights (GAW) of the vehicles in the combination. So the regulation should state that the GCWR is the sum of the GAWRs of all vehicles in combination.
