School Food Safety Inspections

General Comment:*This is a forced entry for a college public policy class. Despite the noted lack of flexibility that the increase in the number of inspections may produce, the benefits of requiring schools to take a second look at their food safety practices far outweigh the inconvenience. It is nice to see the primary supervisory role in the execution of this new rule be handed over to local health officials and State governments, rather than force a more direct federal-level involvement. The establishment of this hierarchy between Federal, State, and local governments will drive out any inefficiencies that may develop or plague the system as it currently stands. Provisions have already been made to correct a potential redundancy when schools use a single preparation and service facility and participate in more than one school meal program ? separate inspections are not a requirement in this case. It is these kinds of inefficiencies that the implementation portion of this rule seeks to address, and I believe it will do so.
