I am for the proposed rule: Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program. I agree that FFVP should encourage the increased consumption of fresh fruits and fresh vegetables in elementary schools serving low income students. Schools participating in the Frozen, canned, dried, certain types of vacuum packed and other types of processed fruits and vegetables would be prohibited from being served in the FFVP. In addition, schools would be required to limit the service of cooked fresh vegetables to a maximum of one service per week as part of a nutrition education lesson. FFVP wants to teach children to eat healthy and improve their dietary habits and long-term health. Many children are accustomed to fast and unhealthy foods. Parents of low income families do not have time to cook healthy meals for their children. This type of unhealthy behavior may lead a child to obesity or even high blood pressure. The FFVP is trying to lead children to a healthy lifestyle by introducing them to fresh fruits and vegetables. The nutrition education lesson shown to children at schools participating in FFVP would be to start eating fresh fruits and vegetables while at home too. Many kids go home and tell their parents what they had to eat at school. I was one of those kids! If it was something that I liked, I would ask my mom if she could cook it for dinner sometimes. Children do not mind eating healthy, a lot of them just do not know which foods are healthy and which foods are unhealthy.
