Limiting this program to fresh fruits and vegetables is not based on sound science and is financially irresponsible. Common sense would clearly show fresh is less accessible and is more expensive than frozen, dried or processed options duirng the U.S school year. Couple that with the food waste generated with fresh versus other formats makes this program even more difficult to understand and morally questionable. The money saved purchasing the less expensive options could allow more school districts to participate reaching more children. Finally, the current fresh options sourced from outside the country would be replaced by US grown produce which would help support our agricultural and related industries.
