public comment on federal register of 5/10/07 vol 72 #90 pg 26567 usda fsis - 9 cfr part 381 docket 2007-0016 chile exporting poultry to us attention daniel engeljohn i oppose chile importing poultry to us. if their inspection system is as good as the u.s. then that is a good reason to deny since the us system is extremely deficient, as witness the chinese putting plastic and other acids into food products sent to the u.s. melamine in our food is the latest example. we have had many others. it shows that this agency is extremely deficient in inspecting imported food products. i dont think we need them to get into the business of doing any more than they do now, which is of such low quality. secondly, shpping from chile is pollution personified. it is time that the us produces its own food primarily instead of exacerbating global warming by importing things we can grow here. the shipping lanes are polluting our oceans since they are so heavily traveled, they are killing whales and other marine life since there are so many ships. the ballast that these ships drop in our ports mean the invasion of all kinds of alien life into our seas. it is time that we start developing in the us what we need. this importing of everything also leads to the awful balance of trade that we have now. we need to work here and develop here. with bird flu being another reason, it is clear we need to stop shipping birds all over the world. we can diminish our risks if we only keep in the us what we grow here. we dont want to import bird flu and certainly seeing how easy melamine got into wheat gluten bird flu can easily come in with this poultry. it is time to develop what we need here. local food. the more local the better. and the higher inspection level the better. the food industry in the us is in serious trouble. we need usda to simplify what it is doing and start paying attention because it is clear at this point, this agency is failing in its jobs. b. sachau 15 elm st florham park nj 07932
