I believe that this is a great idea for not only local consumers who are looking for the availibility of locally grown and raised food but for the local farmers who not only want to provide safe food to the public but without soo much of the cost and the regulations needed. No one should need to spend an outrages amount of more than $10,000 to be able to build some facility or to consist with regulations to have a business and to get at least the first initial product of a business. We must remember that this is the farmers business, and a profit is required. I hope that if we pass through to offer MSU's for meat and poultry then there should be limited regulations to that(not soo much fuss in the laws and in the materials needed to supply the local economy local food) so to not require so much of a problem to the local farmer and beyond. Some examples of these "overload" regulations include, neccesary hot water(what if we want to work with only cold water?), having to have a bathroom on premises , required to use specific items/equipment(what if you want to build or supply the equipment you will be working on?), etc. One thing about regualtions that need to be pointed out forehand, is that we are dealing with local farmers, small producers and business people compared to large industrial producers and businesses like walmart and purdue, and other food producers, etc. If we have to give exemptions and more assistance to local producers in comparison to those large industrial producers than there should be no problem in large industrial companies feeling they are at an unfair game since they have more capital, lawyers and unfair "bureaucrats" processing the exemptions and the ability to continue on with business. Their regulations are at a different state of business and so should local, smalll to large farms in our country. I hope that this should be done with wisdom and understanding as well as to refference to people that know more of how what local farmers need.
