Please do not prevent public transit agencies from providing special school
service. My daughter attends public middle school in Oakland, California and
regularly takes the bus home from school. AC Transit provides transportation for
many middle and high school students in Oakland. Many of these students would
not be able to attend these schools without AC Transit school service as the
regular bus system does not adequately service all the school areas.
Do you imagine there is some private transportation service waiting to take these
students, many of whom come from low income families, to and from school? I
don't think so. Come to Oakland and you will see how many private companies
love to serve Oakland's inner city community. And, the open enrollment program
which allows students to attend a non-neighborhood school would be seriously
damaged by the lack of transportation. You have an obligation to serve these
needy students, not private companies in some other part of the US that have no
intention of serving our Oakland students.
