I strongly believe the io should NOT be removed from the federal list of
endangered wildlife. I have lived in the Mauna Loa Estates in Volcano for
years, and have enjoyed watching the io fly overhead. Two years ago, I was
honored to observe a mated couple hunting on my lot and interacting with each
other for months in the trees outside my windows. Unfortunately, the young
female died and the male flew off. The skies are empty now. I do not see the
number of hawks I used to observe even five years ago, let alone the ones
circling the subdivision of Mauna Loa from two years ago. As a casual observer,
I am concerned about the decrease in numbers of io just in my neighborhood. I
can't imagine removing a species from the list when the numbers observed are
going down in any specific area. I would urge the government to study the io
further before making such a decision that would impact the status of this bird
that has already proven its ability to disappear from every other Hawaiian
island. DO NOT DE-LIST THE HAWAIIAN HAWK.
