The Mazama Pocket Gopher's habitat goes beyond the prairie lands of south Thurson County. They are equally attracted to hillside timber clearings, infact some studies have shown this to be a preferred habitat. With the 91,000 + acres of Capital forest and the surrounding Scatter Creek Wildlife Preserve available for the gopher's habitat it is unfathomable that the government is willing to burden private land owners with restricted uses and expensive studies for a species which has ample habitat available.
