This species is morphologically very similar to the common Sceloporus graciosus. One must wonder if species or even varietal designation is warrented. This lizard may be only a minor variant from the common population. Before listing is contemplated, further genetic studies should be conducted to see if breeding with Sceloporus graciosus is possible. The genetic work in 1997 (Painter et al) is dated. Much progress has been made, and this earlier work confirmed with modern analytical techniques. Lacking a stringent review of the taxonomy of this lizard, listing under the ESA is premature.
