It is essential that the Ozark Hellbender be approved for listing under the ESA. If a population of under 600 and a range limited to one river system doesn't qualify a creature as endangered, then nothing does.
In the recovery plan I urge you to look at the role of introduced trout in laval mortality. Trout are being introduced into the Ozark National Scenic Riverways. I have read studies indicating that the larvae do not have a natural fear of this predacious fish. It's one more stressor this population does not need.
Also, the Current River is a heavily used recreational resource. We need to study possible impacts from the many recreational uses that take place in the core of this creature's tiny habitat.
Listing a species under the ESA shouldn't really be a matter of public comment. Either it is imperilled or it is not. The Ozark hellbender certainly is imperilled. Please support it's inclusion on the Endangered Species List.
Thank you,
