I have encountered many recently dead individuals of sheepnose mussels (Plethobasus cyphyus) on the lower Holston River in the past 10 years. I have never surveyed or looked for live individuals but would suspect a population to still exist on a couple shoals I know. Didn't know if you were aware of this population? I study mussels and have peer reviewed papers published on preimpoundment mussels species from this stretch of river. The shells I have found were quite recent dead. Please contact me if more information is wanted. I have found both aboriginal and recent valves of P. cyphyus.
